Understanding Willy Loman in Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman In order to really understand Willy Loman, from Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s play Death Of A Salesman, the reader must analyze the way his character is developed. Studying his thoughts, actions, how he relates to other characters and how other characters relate to him enables the reader to come to an understanding of the world in which Willy lives. Although Willy sometimes has flashbacks, examining them, as well as his thoughts, helps the reader to understand and relate to him better. Willy had very high, but unrealistic expectations for his boys, especially Biff; he thought that they would be guaranteed success. This is illustrated in the quote, ââ¬Å"I see greatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦With all his hopes and dreams for Biff, Willy never paid much attention to Happy. Any praise and acts of approval were always focused on Biff. This is shown when Biff repeatedly says, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m losing weight, you notice Pop?â⬠and Willy ignores him each time. Willy also has a lot of anger inside of him, which you can notice by his actions. When his boss Howard tells Willy that there is no job for him Willy gets very angry and bangs his fist on the desk in a rage. Willy relates to the other characters in many different ways. With Biff, Willy feels angry, but also scared. He believes that Biff is a failure and could have had a very successful life if he only tried and Willy conveys this message to Biff quite often. On the other hand, Willy thinks that Biff does not love him, perhaps because of the affair that Willy had which only Biff knows about. In the end, Willy is quite surprised when Biff shows that he loves him. He says, ââ¬Å"Isnââ¬â¢t that remarkable? Biff--he likes me!â⬠(pg. 133) These two characters have a very uncomfortable relationship. Willy relates to Linda in a way that reveals his character as well. The readers get the impression that Willy thinks Linda is a stupid woman. He acts reasonably towards her physically, but emotionally he doese not show any respect for her. When she tries to speak, he is constantly telling her to be quiet and to listen, for instance he tells her, ââ¬Å"StopShow MoreRe lated The American Dream Conspiracy in Death of a Salesman Essay1728 Words à |à 7 PagesArthur Millerââ¬â¢s Death of a Salesman tells the story of the failure of a salesman, Willy Loman. Media Violence Against Women Essay - 1609 Words
Media Violence Against Women In the United States, as well as throughout the majority of the world, people are bombarded with information on a daily basis. The majority of the information that it seen or heard is a direct result of someone aiming the information at the masses. Whether it is a company that would like us to buy its product, or a newspaper that would have us believe a certain fact that they are reporting, someone has decided how the information will be presented. This notion brings me to the issue of how our society perpetuates violence against women through the use of the media and television shows. I would argue that, because we are socialized on a daily basis to believe certain ideas, this same processâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Yet, often it is aimed toward a particular group of people, mainly women. It is primarily how these images are presented that leads me to believe that they are contributing to a larger problem. One example of this problem is the recent broadcasting of crimes within schools. In her article, Collective Silence for Collective Violence in Feminista.com, Dorothy Lemmey questions the gender neutral terminology that is used when news agencies report these incidences. In Kentucky, a 14 year old drew a gun and killed 3 students...all the dead are female, killed by boys. She examines the idea that we are much more apt to blame the obvious problems such as the breakdown of family values, gun control, pervasive violence, adolescent hormones....and even a lack of bonding at infancy. However, when this story was reported there was no mention of the sex of any of the victims or how the victims knew their killers. She goes on to point out that it is more likely that violence toward women will not change while we are still in a mind frame of denial. This article made a very good point. How can we possibly address a problem when, for whatever reason, the media refuses to give all of t he facts. It is, in essence, hiding the true motives of a particularly heinous crime, and not calling it what it is....Violence against women. The movie platoon free essay sample
What is your reaction to Platoon? How is it similar and/or different to other war films you have seen? What is the films central focus? After watching Platoon, I dropped to marveling why Oliver Stone was adept to make such an effective movie without falling into the trick Truffaut talked about how he made the video riveting without making it exhilarating. Heres how I think he did it. He forsook the choreography that is standard in nearly all war movies. He abandoned any try to make it clear where the diverse forces were in relation to each other, so hat we not ever know where our side stands and where they are. Rather than of assault scenes in which lines are apparently drawn, his battle scenes engage an all together 360 degree qualifications: Any shot might be directed at friend or enemy, and in the despairing hurry of battle, many of his fighters not ever have a clear concept of precisely who they are firing at, or why. Platoon is one of those movies which once seen will not ever be forgotten, and, at smallest for those who were not in Vietnam, will eternally adjust the way in which the conflict is considered. The films central focus is on Vietnams war. 2. What are the political implications and meaning of this film? Explain using examples of scenes in the film. Platoon manages to be authentically Vietnam while still providing a very good storyline with the two Sergeants and their consequences on Juvenile Sheen. The video organizes to use the main plot of the two Sergeants and their dealings with Sheen to really showcase what Vietnam was in a way Apocalypse Now couldnt. For instance, Sergeant Barnes murder of the woman in the town really builds on stress etween Barnes and Sergeant Elias and at the identical times gives a glimpse of what the truth of Vietnam was like. While the movie rarely gets into the relationships between the fghters they are all still kept within the context of the war. Neither the edge tracking philosophizing and introspection of Apocalypse now nor the relationship aim of Deer Hunter is present in Platoon. The video resides grounded in its position and theme. The theme of Platoon is Vietnam not anything additional. Thats why if ever somebody where to inquire you for a movie about Vietnam, Platoon would be the perfect video. They are wraiths, half-seen in the foliage, their occurrence scented on Jungle paths, clues of their route unearthed in ammo dumps buried beneath villages. Rather than, there is the clear sense of hazard all around, and the occurrence of citizens who sometimes enrage the troops Just by standing there and looking bewildered and helpless. One ot the most amazing scenes in the complete movie is a view wit n the town people of a Vietnam city. The view makes the viewer suppose that villagers may be harboring enemy forces and designing against the armies. The soldiers living in fear ot knowing who is on their edge start to get furious. This anger is rapidly turned into violence and madness. Finally the fghters start to misplace it and are eager to murder almost any person on that they suspect. Others fghters try and remain serene and attach with their principles and this directs to some of their deaths. It is easy to realize why soldiers answer to these situations as they do. It is not astonishing that by the end of the view Americans are really killing other Americans. There is Just too much disarray; which appears to be the foremost topic of both this ideo and the war. 3. How is good and evil depicted? Particularly in relation to characters and their actions. What is the morality play described in the John Stone article for this week? In Platoon, the North Vietnamese armed detachment (NVA) and the Viet Cong are backdrop numbers in a more merciless family tragedy a sibling rivalry between a good brother, an evil male sibling, and the least old brother compelled to choose between them. Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger) comprises the foremost of the juicers and a man for whom the battle and murdering has become the only world. He s a character who has narrowed his viewpoint of survival to the ability to battle and thus he often steps over the lines of human decency and ethics. The accepted leader of the heads is also a war-torn soldier, but an idealistic one. Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe) is a survivor with a sleepy grin who wears two dice and a crucifix round his neck. Elias is the platoons sign of conscience, its Shaman of racial harmony and compassion. The confrontation between Elias and Barnes creates an inward war in the platoon, which hardens the statement of the horrors of conflict, and the conflict in Vietnam in specific. Engaged between Dafoes philosophical Elias and Berengers ruthless Barnes is Sheens Chris, both Everyman and Stones adjust ego, whose purity of soul becomes the stake in an allegorical assault of good and evil. The grisly truth is brought to life by Stones dialogue and emotion-charged battle scenes, lifting thought-provoking inquiries of ethics in this still-resonant classic. 4. Do you agree with the Christian allegorical argument in the Beck article? Explain. Yes, I agree with the same. In The Christian Allegorical Structure of Platoon, Avent Childress Beck hunts for simply to document Stones allegorical structure in researched detail in an effort to display that Platoon is a film which delicacies its assembly to the organized familiarities and emotive solace of the Christian narrative. 5. What is the function of the voice-over in the film? How does it affect our understanding of the film and its political implication? Does the film have to do with class? The video is narrated by a Juvenile fighter (Charlie Sheen) based on Stone himself. He is a middle-class school student who volunteers for the conflict because he considers t his patriotic obligation, and who is told, shortly after he ar rives in the battle zone, You dont belong here. He believes it. There are no false heroics in this movie, and no benchmark heroes; the narrator is rapidly at the point of physical disintegrate, bedeviled by long marches, no doze, ants, snakes, slashes, bruises and unchanging, gnawing fear. In a view near the beginning of the film, he is on guard duty when he apparently sees foe armies approaching his place, and he freezes. He will only step-by-step, innocently, becomes an adequate fighter. The movie is notified in a style that hurries headlong into ncidents. Pondering over the given facts, we conclude that Voice over plays an eternal part in the movie as this the factor which bounds the viewers to the central theme line of the movie. The voice over helps to make the motive behind the movie more clear and demonstrates the effect of war; in this case the Vietnamese war.

Gender Planning And Development The Theory -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Gender Planning And Development Theory? Answer: Introduction Over the years, the global social scenario has experienced considerable dynamics and transformations with the way of living, quality of life, general mindsets and social level of acceptance increasing considerably. In this aspect, women have progressed substantially in all the aspects of life, in a global framework, which especially includes the educational and professional aspects. Women, in the last few decades have progressed phenomenally, reducing the gaps, which existed in terms of the privileges, advantages, and opportunities, which the two genders of the society, received (Boston O'Grady, 2015). Women are increasingly exploring newer opportunities and are marking their presence increasingly in almost all the personal as well as professional domains of life. However, though women have infiltrated in all the professional domains of the society, there still remains several aspects where gender inequality still prevails, especially in the professional domains of the society in the global scenario. The primary areas of concern in workplaces where women in general face discrimination and remain less advantageous than their male counterparts are in the aspects of payment and position. In spite of women progressing significantly and becoming at par with the male counterparts, they still often are discriminated in terms of acknowledgement and compensations in the workplaces across the world (Abc.net.au, 2018). Keeping this into account, the concerned report tries to discuss the problems of gender discrimination in the contemporary workplaces and the steps which have been taken by the employers to combat the same, from the perspective of human resources management. To discuss the same, it takes reference of an article by John Hilton, which is summarized in the following section. Article Summary The article named Is HR doing enough to address gender inequality? by John Hilton, published in Human Resource Director, Australia on 14the December, 2017, takes into account the dynamics related to the gender pay equity issues in different eminent business organizations and the steps and perceptions of the relevant officials in dealing with the problem. The article takes into account the Gender Equality Agency data on 2016-2017, which shows that the employers in the last few years have progressed extensively in the perspective of addressing the issue of gender pay gaps present in the economy in an overall basis, in Australia (Hilton, 2018). The article takes into account the perceptions of several relevant officials, which includes the belief of Peter Acheson, the CEO of the People Bank, as a Pay Equity Ambassador. According to him, in the country, there is prominent presence of gender pay gap in all the strata of professional scenario of the country and it exists irrespective of the designation and job roles of women in general. According to him, the biases can be both conscious as well as unconscious, with the employers often not realizing that they are bringing in gender bias. In this aspect, he also highlights the aspects like the usage of words in their job ads, which creates perception among the women labor force that they are not eligible for some jobs, thereby creating unintentional gender bias (Dipboye Colella, 2013). The article also puts up the views of Colin Brookes, the director of SAP, according to whom there still exists considerable pay gap with respect to gender across the country. He also puts forward the steps, which have been taken by his company to combat this situation, which includes same starting salaries, similar job roles for same skilled personnel and also flexibility in the workplace. Currently, the gender pay gap of the company exists at 2%, which the company has committed to reduce to zero. Gender Inequality in Workplace From the above article and the assertions of the people whose perceptions have been included, it becomes evident that in the contemporary workplace, gender discrimination still exist and the main arena of concern is the inequality in payment between the male and female employees in the workplaces. Australia, though being one of the predominantly developed economies of the world and though have progressed significantly in the aspects of economic growth and development of the population, including female population specifically, still encounters the problem of gender inequalities in the workplaces (McLaughlin, Uggen Blackstone, 2012). Australia, though experiencing significant progress industrially, there still exists significant gender discrimination in terms of payment in the workplaces as it has been seen that even in the contemporary periods; women earn nearly 24% less than that of men in the country. The pattern of discrimination between men and women work force in the country becomes even more prominent with the help of the following figure: As can be seen from the above figure, women are predominantly present in those jobs in the country, whose pay scale are low, while the high paid jobs are mainly taken by the male population of the country. There is another prominent trend, which can be seen from the above figure. As the pay scale goes on increasing, the number of women workers goes on decreasing while the number of men workers goes on impressively increasing (Tomaskovic-Devey, 2014). This in turn indicates towards the fact that there exists considerable discrimination in terms of gender, in the country, when it comes to the types of jobs and the salary structure, with the male population being highly privileged. Apart from the aspect of types of jobs, inequality also exists in the aspect of payment among male and female employees of the country and this is present in private as well as in the public sectors, which can be seen as follows: As can be seen from the above figure, the pay gap exists significantly in private sector as compared to the public sector and surprisingly it had actually increased with time, which is alarming. This is because for a country as developed as Australia, the presence of high gender gap in the private sector, especially in the current period indicates towards the presence of lower economic as well as social welfare for the women in the country (Fujimoto, Azmat Hrtel, 2013). Reasons behind the presence of gender pay gap in Australia The above discussion and the empirical evidences, present in the country points towards the presence of visible gender gap in the workplace of the country, especially in terms of payments and other incentives. There are several plausible reasons behind the presence of such gender gaps in the country, the primary ones being as follows: One of the primary reasons behind the discrimination among the employees regarding wage gap is that the female workforce mainly participates in the part time jobs, with nearly 75% of the total part time workers of the country being female. The female-dominated companies in the country are also seen to be low paid. The industrial segregation also exists in terms of the male-female pay gaps (Smith, Caputi Crittenden, 2012). One of the primary reasons behind the presence of such wage gaps in all the sectors of the professional domain of the country is the aspect of childcare. Around 62% of all the employed female in the country with children under five years of age had been found to work part time. The percentage of parental leave taken by women in the country is also significantly higher than the percentage of that of men. The aspect of childcare and parental leave also makes women much less competitive and capable apparently in the eyes of the employers, which affect their career growth negatively, thereby aggravating the problem of gender pay gap in the workplaces even more apparent in the contemporary period, especially in the private sector of the country (Hacker, 2017). Keeping this into account in reference to the problems of gender discrimination in the professional domain of the country, there arises the need for proper policies to eradicate the problem of gender pay in the country. The human resource department of the companies being the ones responsible for efficient employee management and enhancement of their performance, there are several steps and policies which can be taken into consideration for the purpose of tackling the problem of gender pay gap in the country (Bandiera Natraj, 2013). Steps to remove gender pay gap: Human Resource Perspective a) Gender unbiased payment system- One of the primary steps, which can be taken by the companies to remove the gap, is by setting up a payment framework, which compensates both the genders equally, based on their capabilities and job roles and not on their genders. b) Reducing gender stereotypes- The companies and especially the management of the companies need to change their mindsets to reduce the stereotypes, which exist in the professional domains of the companies in the country. These stereotypes mainly exist in terms of the notion that women are less capable and contribute less productivity to the organization due to their professional commitments (Bratton Gold, 2012). c) Pro-Active human resource department- The human resource department presents in the companies should be active and responsive enough to keep a vigilant eye on the operational framework such that no pay gaps or discrepancies exist which make the female employees feel less valued and thus less motivated to work. d) Uniform regulations for all the employees- One of the primary ways to combat gender equality in all the aspects of the professional domain is the presence of uniform regulatory framework in the company, which includes rules regarding uniform rules and others. e) Punishment for gender discrimination- Gender discrimination, in the workplaces, not only occur in terms of payment to the employees but also in terms of general approach of the male employees and management towards the female workers, indecent behavior and other offences which makes the female employees feel de-motivated and threatened to work in such companies (Moser, 2012). f) Leadership roles- Inequality in genders across the professional domains can also be substantially removed by giving different administrative roles and leadership chances to the female employees of the companies, which contribute significantly in empowering the female employees of the companies and of the country in general. Conclusion From the above discussion, it is evident that in spite of significant progress of employment sectors and professional domains across the globe and women making mark in almost all the professional domains, there still exists the problem of gender inequality in the professional domains of people, in the global framework in general and specifically in Australia. Although many employers have progressed to some extent in this aspect, by taking appropriate steps in reducing the gender pay gaps and other discriminations in the workplaces, there still remains avenues of improvement for the others in the country, which if implemented appropriately can help in combating the problem efficiently. History Behind The Atom Essays - Atomic Physics, Nuclear Physics
History Behind The Atom The History Behind The Atom Throughout the discovery of the atom, many scientists worked to formulate how the atom works. Which began in the early 1800's with John Dalton, to our current model of the electron cloud developed by Schrodinger. During this long process of the discovery the atom, took many models and scientists. The entire group of scientists who assisted in the discovery of the atom used each other's model to improve each other's theories. Firstly, John Dalton showed that, collectively, the three laws, the law of definite proportion, the law of conversation of masses, and the law of multiple proportion. These three laws demonstrate the existence of the atom. Also, Using these three laws he developed a theory called, Dalton's Atomic Theory. This includes five basic principles; 1) all matter is made of indivisible and indestructible atoms, 2) atoms of a given element are identical in their physical and chemical properties, 3) atoms of different elements have different physical and chemical properties, 4) atoms of different elements combine in simple whole-number ratios to form chemical compounds, 5) atoms cannot be subdivided, created or destroyed when they are combined, separated, or rearranged in chemical reactions. However, after scientists look more carefully at his points they found some weaknesses. One weakness was that the atom was found to be indivisible, and they had smaller particles. After Dalton came up with the five points, J.J. Thompson came along. He discovered that charged and magnets deflected the straight paths of cathode rays. In addition, he discovered negative and positive charged particles. He stated that the atom was made of smaller particles called, electrons and protons. In the discovery of the electron he used the Cathode-ray tube. As he researched he came up with a model of the atom, he stated that the atom was a ?plum pudding model.? This model featured negatively charged electrons embedded in a ball of positive charge. After, J.J. Thompson came Ernst Rutherford, who was a student of Mr. Thompson. He created ?gold-foil experiment? which untimely-disproved J.J. Thompson's theory. In this experiment he directed a beam of alpha particles at a very thin gold foil sheet. This was so the Rutherford could measure the angles of the particles coming off the gold foil. Sheet. Most of the alpha particles went through the sheet, however some of the particles hit the foil and bounced back. The reason of this was that the particles that bounced off the nucleus and the particles that went straight through traveled in the empty space. The major was that his experiment was that the atom would eventually lose its energy and collapse in the nucleus. Around 1913, a Danish physicist named Niels Bohr came up with a new model to further our knowledge of the atom. In his model, he purposes that the electrons in the atom can reside only to certain energy levels. He related his model to a ladder, a person can stand on the rungs of the ladder, and however it is impossible for a person to stand between the rungs. The only way for the electron to jump to the next level is for it to have a Quantum leap. Which is the leap from one energy level to another, and the lowest energy level is called the ground state. Thus, comes to the conclusion that electrons are quantized. Helping Bohr's model become superior, Plank declared that energy comes in packets or bundles of energy that is discontinued. This went all against classical science and he was not favored with the other scientist. Helping prove Bohr's model he used the bright-line spectrum, which helped him prove his model. There was one flaw in his model, which was that it did not work with multiple elements. After Bohr and Plank, another educated scientist came along who was DeBroglie, he purposed the Wave Particle Duality Theory. This theory stated that matter can act like waves, and waves can act like particles. To prove his theory he used the mathematical expression of mc=hc. Which meant that the m stood for the mass particles and the stood for the wavelength. Taking DeBroglie's model to a further extent was Heisanburg; he treated electrons as particles. He

Abortion Essays (1661 words) - Abortion, Free Essays, Term Papers
Abortion Essays (1661 words) - Abortion, Free Essays, Term Papers Abortion Abortion is the ending of pregnancy before birth and is morally wrong. An abortion results in the death of an embryo or a foetus. Abortion destroys the lives of helpless, innocent children and illegal in many countries. By aborting these unborn infants, humans are hurting themselves; they are not allowing themselves to meet these new identities and unique personalities. Abortion is very simply wrong. Everyone is raised knowing the difference between right and wrong. Murder is wrong, so why is not abortion? People argue that it is not murder if the child is unborn. Abortion is murder since the foetus being destroyed is living, breathing and moving. Why is it that if an infant is destroyed a month before the birth, there is no problem, but if killed a month after birth, this is inhumane murder? It is morally and strategically foolish, because we lose the middle when we talk about reproductive rights without reference to a larger moral and spiritual dimension, and we are unwilling to use language like transgression and redemption, or right and wrong. -Wolf p54 The main purpose abortions are immoral is how they are so viciously done. Everyday, innocent, harmless foetuses that could soon be laughing children are being brutally destroyed. One form of abortion is to cut the foetus into pieces with serrated forceps before being removed, piece by piece from the uterus by suction with a vacuum aspirator. Another form consists of bringing the foetus feet first into the birth canal, puncturing its skull with a sharp instrument and sucking out the brain tissue. The body parts, such as the head, are given letters, rather than refer to the parts as what they are. In my opinion this is for the doctors who cannot face the reality of what they are doing. The remains of the foetus or embryo, as the case may be, are put into everyday, plastic buckets and then sent to a dumpster where these precious bones and limbs are disposed. However, how and when an abortion takes place are matters of little importance to pro- abortionists and other defenders. Even former abortion practitioners from varying backgrounds and religions have a new view on abortion. These changes of heart were caused by psychological, religious and scientific reasons. One doctor, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, performed 60,000 abortions and supervised 10,000, before scientific evidence and the use of an ultrasound, convinced him he was promoting and participating what he now calls the most atrocious holocaust in the history of the United States. Other doctors refuse to perform legal abortions, saying they should save lives rather than destroy them. Many argue is it the women's or the foetus' rights and values that are being trampled on? Pro-choice movements sometimes fall back on an abortion rhetoric that seems to dehumanize and trivialize the death of a foetus as a way to humanize and make important the reproductive rights of women. (Wolf p54) Women can treat an unwanted foetus as a violation of her civil rights and is therefor justified tin using force to expel it (McMillan pA12) The decision is not up to the mother because she is not God. Only God, the ultimate creator has the right to choose who may live and who shall die. Humans do not have the right or the power to control the quality of life and to avoid suffering. The issue of abortion is not just life, but how life is created and the extent to which human intention and control the process, both before and after birth. All humans inventions and interventions may give us a world to regret. (Clark p3) With abortion, we humans give ourselves dominion over a large part of God's plans and our destiny. Abortion becomes especially evil when the bond between mother and child is broken and it is being used as an alternative birth control when humans cannot control their irresponsible sexual hungers. If beings are responsible enough to be sexually active, they should also be responsible enough to accept consequences, and if that means becoming pregnant and creating a life, then that life should have the opportunity to live. There should be a bond or relationship between a mother and child, whether born or unborn. Mothers and her children form a bond unlike any other felling of love; when a child is aborted, before given the right to grow in the bond, does the mother feel the connection with her child or is it just uterine material. Abortion is never about just abortion. It is
